The sharply sculpted glass towers of Neo Bankside, with the aid of using Lord Richard Rogers’ practice, RSH+P, teeter above Tate Modern at the South Bank as a image of the capital’s superheated housing market, with penthouses on sale for up to 22m. Further east, off Cable Street, stands an unassuming block of residences with the aid of using Níall McLaughlin, which completes a Peabody property from the 1870s with a good-looking brick constructing, mixing in so nicely with its context you won’t even note it had arrived.
Representing polar opposites of the housing spectrum, each tasks are deemed probably worth of getting made “the most important contribution to the evolution of structure” this 12 months. They are joined withinside the war for the RIBA’s pinnacle gong with the aid of using a most cancers care center in Lanarkshire, a south London kingdom faculty, a college block in Greenwich and an extension to the Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester.
It is a reasonably subdued shortlist in comparison to preceding years, and not using a stand-out flashy baubles. The tasks favor a quieter approach, exuding first-class and interest to element withinside the manner they’re made. There’s a positive nostalgia withinside the air too, with a go back to brick and precast concrete panels, and a restraint that possibly displays the chastened instances wherein they have been designed – the gradual trudge of the constructing cycle walking numerous years in the back of the economy.
There are a few awesome omissions here, though, from Haworth Tompkins’ cautious refurbishment and extension of the National Theatre to Architecture 00’s exemplary Foundry workplace constructing in Vauxhall. It could had been satisfactory to look a hint of magic at the listing too, just like the Rothschilds’ beguiling Flint House, with the aid of using Skene Catling de l. a. Peña, or the fashionable origami-like swimming pool pavilion with the aid of using Duggan Morris for an Alfriston unique wishes faculty, each of which display what structure can carry over and above realistic wishes.
Of all of the candidates, McLaughlin’s housing scheme is as near an ideal solution to its short as any. As a version for different housing institutions and neighborhood government to follow, prizing it the prize could ship out a effective message approximately in which considerate structure is maximum wanted proper now.
A welcome timewarp, this 40m secondary faculty complicated in south London takes its cue from the Nineteen Sixties campus that stood at the site, at the start constructed below the course of Leslie Martin (whose meeting block remains) and the architects’ branch of the Greater London Council. With six new coaching blocks in a parklike setting, it’s miles a hanging throwback to the times whilst faculty homes have been invested with love and care, overflowed with mild and constructed to closing.
As one of the closing faculties of recent labor’s high priced Building Schools for the Future programmed, the layout represents a fruits of the architects’ 10-12 months involvement with contractor Lend Lease, and it has a adulthood that marks it out from lots of the sooner BSF tasks. It sheds the standard quirks of jauntily colored plastic facades and infinite break-out zones, concentrating alternatively on beneficent classrooms, extensive corridors and massive windows. It is a strong, grown-up constructing, with the air of a college campus, which the academics say has had a knock-on impact at the pupils’ behavior.
Rare for a faculty, it is also beautiful. The sculpted concrete facades have already stimulated GCSE artwork tasks; their chamfered precast panels can be instantly from the studio of Marcel Breuer, the Bauhaus fashion dressmaker who constructed a comparable faculty in Boston withinside the 1970s. It additionally helped that the headteacher turned into partial to Mies van der Rohe – a power glaring withinside the glossy protected walkway, ingeniously common from off-the-peg bus-stops.
